Readiness to achieve Mastery

Posted in Voices from the management on October 26, 2010 by The Summer'Singers

There is a saying that once you have spent 100,000 hours practicing, you’ll become a pro in what you do. And what does that mean? It simply translates into 12 hours a day x 365 days x 22.83 years.

That sounded a bit unrealistic, many don’t practice 12 hours a day for 23 years to be in the world orchestra, so what is crucial? the efficiency of practicing.

So I’m gonna quote a more realistic approach……summary from one of the blogger:
–Quote–
There are four levels of proficiency in any valuable skill – incompetence, competence, mastery, and virtuosity.

• To get past incompetence, you must spend about 1,000 hours practicing the skill you eventually want to master.

• After putting in about 1,000 hours, you will be competent. To achieve mastery, you will have to continue to practice that skill for a total of 5,000 hours.

• Virtuosity is extremely rare. You can’t get it simply by practicing. You must also have a natural gift. Even then, you must practice at least 10,000 hours to achieve it.

To master skills and achieve greatness, what you need is tenacity, humility, time, and a good teacher.

Which means…. you need 12 hours a day x 2.7 months to be COMPETENT, and another 14 months with 12 hours practice a day to achieve mastery.

In other words, from our weekly practice, to master singing, we need to spend at least 14 years to achieve mastery….

And what would that mean? it means more time needed, and to treat SS as part of your career.

The question then is…. ARE WE ALL READY FOR THIS CHALLENGE?

It is never easy to be an entrepreneur and it is even harder to sustain after setup. The support from family, friends and especially love ones is crucial to make this happen. And on behalf of the management team, sincerely thank all the families and loved ones who have given us the encouragement and support in this challenging journey.

Lastly, 不问SS带给我什么,只问我为SS付出多少
(it’s not a matter of how much the choir (SS) can give me, it’s about how much I can offer to SS).

W. A. Mozart: Ave Verum Corpus

A translation of this hymn into English is:

Hail, true Body, born
of the Virgin Mary,
truly suffered, sacrificed
on the cross for man,
from whose pierced side
flowed water and blood:
Let it be for us a foretaste
in the trial of death.
